Entry #25
Yo yo yo everyone
Masaaki Yuasa, one of the most wicked-cool animation directors around, is doing a Kickstarter for a new film and you should all go check it out and throw money at it.
You seen Mind Game? He's the guy that did that, which should be enough reason to care. Haven't seen Mind Game? Watch Mind Game.
And NOW give money at him to do more things.
In other news I'm making more things. Things with action and shading and other things that are hard to draw. Hopefully out before the end of the year. So look out for that happening, or don't.

WOW This post got ooold.
So there IS a new work-in-progress, hmm? How many hours have been put into it so far?
(an obviously inoffensive, revealing question, which will probably go ignored in favor of a new post, extolling the merits of his new creation)

I like MindGame but Kick Heart is only a 10 minute short. Why shoud I fund a 10 minute short? There are a lot of independent animes made by a really small studio or only one peson.
People can and do make things on their own, but when people do that it's a pretty intense labour of love and that doesn't mean we can expect everybody to. If somebody makes a film, even a short one, and does it without funding from somewhere, that doesn't mean it's not costing them anything, it means they've got a day job to pay the bills and have to make a film in their spare time, which is a very intense thing to do to yourself if you want to make something as long as 10 minutes with actual production value.
http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=OG W0aQSgyxQ This seven minute film took 8 years to make. If he had funding, then he would have been able to pay the bills while doing it and work on it full time, and afford to hire other people to work on it, and it wouldn't have taken nearly as long. But instead he had to make it alongside doing other jobs, getting home and then doing this instead of sleeping or relaxing or socialising. He's demonstrated it's possible, but speaking as an animator myself there's no fucking way I'm ever going to EXPECT people to torture themselves to that degree.
Animation is a very intense job, and just because we often don't get payed, that doesn't mean paying an animator for what is several hundred man-hours of work is unwarranted.

Ya know, I'm getting use of this whole kickstarter thing; people begging other people for money so they can make shit.....but their new slogan should be "Fuck you, give us money"
I'd say that's a fairly invalid criticism of crowd-source funding. People always need to get money from somewhere to make things, and if you can't find an investor who wants to fund your film, asking the people who want to WATCH the film seems like a brilliant solution to me. People have a better idea of what the people want to see than large investing bodies do, so better, more interesting films can get made.
I'm not giving them money cuz they're begging for anything. I'm giving them money cuz I just want to see the film, and they need to pay the bills somehow if they're gonna be working full time on it. If you don't want to see the film then don't give them money and go do something else.
